Sodium bicarbonate - a bit of history

The ancient Egyptians already used the properties of natron, a mineral composed of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate. They extracted this substance from the evaporation of salt lakes and used it as soap to wash their bodies. This substance was also used to mummify the body; bicarbonate has excellent dehydrating properties.

In 1791, a French chemist first developed sodium bicarbonate as we know it today. Several improvements were later made to its production and refining. Today's bicarbonate is primarily obtained from the chemical reaction between chalk and salt: two virtually inexhaustible sources.
