Start fermenting your kitchen waste
The EM Agriton Bokashi Starter (2 kg) contains wheat bran with Effective Micro-organisms.
Speeds up the fermentation process in the Bokashi kitchen bucket and prevents unpleasant odors.
100% natural, low-odour and rich in micro-life – for healthy soil and plants.
EM Agriton Bokashi Starter – wheat bran with Effective Micro-organisms (2 kg)
The Bokashi Starter from EM Agriton is the heart of the Bokashi system.
This natural wheat bran is fermented with Effective Micro-organisms (EM) , which initiate the fermentation process in the Bokashi bucket.
Where regular compost decomposes slowly and sometimes smells, Bokashi works with fermentation – a controlled process in which good bacteria convert organic material into valuable nutrients, without rotting or odor nuisance.
The starter contains millions of active lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and molds , all of natural origin.
These microorganisms ensure that kitchen waste ferments instead of rotting , creating valuable organic material that strengthens soil life and feeds plants.
The basis of the Bokashi method was developed by the Japanese professor Teruo Higa , who discovered that stimulating good bacteria is much more effective than fighting harmful microorganisms with chemicals.
Today, EM technology is used worldwide in agriculture, horticulture, and environmental projects — and with this starter kit, you can easily use it at home.
Benefits of the EM Agriton Bokashi Starter:
✅ Fermented wheat bran with EM (Effective Microorganisms)
✅ Starts and accelerates the Bokashi fermentation process
✅ Prevents rot and unpleasant odors in kitchen waste
✅ Promotes healthy soil life and natural cycle
✅ 100% natural, safe and biodegradable
✅ Suitable for Bokashi kitchen bucket or compost heap
✅ Fresh, slightly sweet and sour aroma (similar to fermentation of wine or beer)
Usage:
Sprinkle approximately 20 ml of Bokashi starter with each layer of kitchen waste in the Bokashi kitchen bucket .
Repeat with each new layer to keep the fermentation process active.
The fermented Bokashi can then be used as a natural soil improver or plant food .
With EM Agriton Bokashi Starter, you can turn kitchen waste into a valuable resource — full of microbial life, nutrients, and natural power.
What is Bokashi?
Bokashi is the Japanese word for "well-fermented organic material." The organic materials are sealed airtight. This allows a fermentation process to take place, producing beneficial metabolic products from microorganisms. This preservation technique preserves the energy in the product. Just like sauerkraut, bokashi has a higher nutritional value than unfermented organic matter.
Bokashi is suitable as a soil improver and is a nutrient source for soil-dwelling microorganisms. These microorganisms establish themselves permanently in the soil, multiply, and dominate the harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi present.
Bokashi is traditionally used in Japan to increase microbial diversity in the soil and provide plants with bioactive nutrients, such as growth hormones, antibiotics, vitamins, and amino acids. This provides plants with more essential energy and greater resistance to harmful bacteria and fungi.
The neutral microorganisms that initially chose the previously dominant harmful microorganisms in a pathogenic soil will now join the effective microorganisms of EM. A pathogenic soil thus becomes a disease-suppressing soil.
Within agriculture and horticulture, this is the most effective and sustainable way to get more benefit from the soil.
Bokashi starter: Basic product for your own soil improver
To help you make this unique soil improver yourself, a basic product called Bokashi Starter has been developed. Its main ingredient is wheat bran (a conditioned industrial byproduct), fermented with EM Active. The beneficial microorganisms in EM Active have converted the bran into a high-quality fermented product with a distinctive sweet-sour aroma.
Bokashi starter is a solid product and is preferred over the liquid EM Active for the production of organic waste Bokashi. With EM Active, there is a risk of the moisture content of organic waste Bokashi becoming too high. For this reason, a special kitchen bucket has been designed to drain the excess moisture, the so-called Bokashi Kitchen Bucket.
By using Bokashi starter, you can turn your own organic waste into a soil improver that promotes nutrition, structure, water and air balance, and soil life.
